Radio Frequencies For The Bergen County, New Jersey Area

BERGEN COUNTY

 

BERGEN COUNTY BERGEN COUNTY This introduction covers the County level, separate from but provides support to the local agencies. Below are tabs for the approximately 200 separate local Police/Fire/OEM frequencies are used within the county: Population 900,000+, consists of 70 municipalities with 69 municipal fire departments (4 are full time paid), 68 local Police Departments, 3 County Law Enforcement Agencies, Interstate Park Police, NJ/NY Port Authority. The NJ State Police [utilizing their 800 trunk system] limit their patrols to the Garden State Parkway –Bloomfield barracks tg 26926, NJ Turnpike – Newark barracks tg 27024, Route 80 Totowa barracks tg 35760- exclusively The remaining state highways are covered by local and County Police.

NJ/NY Port Authority Police patrol the George Washington Bridge (800 EDACS system tg 00-102 (453.800 pl 100.0 maintenance & toll plazas) and Teterboro airport.

The Palisades Interstate Park Police – NJ section HQ in Alpine, [155.4525 DPL 265] covers the park property along the Hudson River and patrol the Parkway from the George Washington Bridge north to the Rockland County NY State Line exclusively (approximately 11.5 miles).

The Bergen County Police, Headquarters in Hackensack, off Route 4 east, presently use 8 conventional UHF repeater channels; some channels are mixed mode digital/analog,. Dispatch [“Communications”] primary channels are 477.16250, 477.2875 & 477.5375. Units include but not limited to a highway patrol units for State Routes such as 3, 46, 17, 4, 202, 208, 9W; a traffic safety - truck weight/inspection unit, Bomb Squad, SWAT, Mounted, Auto Theft, K-9, Executive Protection, Juvenile, Park/Property Security, Office of Emergency Management, Medical Examiner investigation unit; and maintain an office at Bergen Community College [main campus Paramus, satellite campus’s in Hackensack & Lyndhurst] along with security (857.7125); they have patrolled individual towns when requested by local officials due to hazardous and emergency situations. Due to the highway congestion associated with the many roadways in the County, they have instituted a Traffic Incident Management Plan – the setting up of prearrange detours in case of a blockage or long term closure of county roads or state highways; manned by New Jersey DOT and County Police Officers – using cache of mobile variable message signs and portable lighting towers which also can supplement local towns mobile signs.

In 2011 they will be transitioning to a Smart Zone UHF Motorola Trunk P25 System, using a mix of 16 channels spread among at 4 sites. Several local Police and Fire agencies are expected to use the system and coverage testing is being conducted by some of the local agencies using only 4 talk groups at this time.

The Bergen County Prosecutors Office investigates all major crimes within the county, with the use of various Task Forces - Arson, Fatal Accident, Narcotics, and Computer Crimes, which is made up of Prosecutors Investigators, County Police, County Sheriff officers and local Officers. The Bergen County Sheriff maintains the Jail and Court House Security (CD units 472.450), Civil Process Service, Prisoner Transportations (SSU), Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) units provide crime scene evidence collection and examination for the County and local towns (“operations” 477.1875), fugitive squad with the Prosecutors Office. K-9 unit is assigned to the Jail.

For major events, evacuations, riots, strikes there is now in place a procedure for calling up additional Law Enforcement resources - RDF - Rapid Deployment Force - at one time the County Police would be mobilized to free up local officers, but now under the direction of the County Prosecutor, the County Police, Sheriff and the local Police Chiefs Association have form three companies ALFA, BROVO, CHARLIE; pulled from available local/County officers to respond to major emergencies- radios/communications and any specialized equipment needed are supplied by the County Police who maintain a cache of gear and equipment.

County Police 911 Communications/ OEM office in Mahwah (at the Police & Fire academy compound) maintain dispatch services for the County operated EMS Units [presently 4 units], and various County agencies like County DPW/Roads, Animal Shelter, Senior/meals on Wheels bus’s, Health, Hazmat etc, and the Ridgefield & Demarest Police, fire, ambulance units. The County has back up dispatch capabilities for New Milford, River Edge, and Oradell fire departments and all towns utilizing 154.1600 911 calls not requiring initial County response is transferred to the local agencies.

The County utilizes Verizon cellular based MDT system shared with most local towns, which can & is used for partial dispatching by some towns.

In Ridgewood “Central” receives 911 calls from the surrounding northwest Bergen area and directly dispatches fire units for Ridgewood, Glen rock, Park Ridge, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, New Milford, River Edge, Oradell.

River Vale dispatches for Old Tappan,

The Borough of Teterboro, contracts for Police Services with Little Ferry (covers north of Route 46) and Moonachie Police Department v(south of Route 46). Fire and Ambulance coverage is covered by Hasbrouck Heights. Teterboro Airport has 2 crash trucks which can contact local fire units on county wide mutual aid154.280 & 154.205 Hasbrouck Heights Fire.

The NY/NJ Port Authority Police patrol the airport property and have been heard on the EDACS Newark Airport talk group 00-081, but maintain primary contact with the Moonachie Police on 501.7875

The Borough of Rockliegh contracts with the Borough of Northvale for Police and Ambulance services and fire dispatch. The County maintains a Health Care-Nursing home complex as well as a juvenile residential substance abuse facility, a Vocational High school and middle school programs and programs for handicap adults and have County Police and security stationed within the complex.

All Fire Departments have 154.2800 as Channel 13 in their vhf radios along with 154.265, 154.295which are the county mutual aid fire ground channel. Local Mutual Aid coordinators have been provided County Police radios with OEM channel 11/12 477.2875 as well as New Jersey UTAC freq’s

Those Towns on UHF frequencies have the State UTAC freq's as well as County Police channels 1 (477.1625) and 11 (477.2875) which is also used by the New Jersey Dept Of Transportation - DOT. County Police also maintain a talk group (58000) with DOT on the State Trunk system.

Paramedic Units are Hospital based and are dispatched on 155.1750, by MICOM then switch over and contact the towns on the police frequency. Several Hospitals maintain their own BLS units to respond to towns if needed. The County also has several BLS Ambulances available to towns if needed; currently out of the County complex in Rockliegh, at the

County EMS training Center in Paramus, and a yet unnamed site in Carlstadt. County EMS units are dispatched on County Police ch 11 477.5375.

Paramedic Units based at Hackensack University Medical Center respond as part of The County Police SWAT team. The Hospital also maintains several MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) vehicles. NorthStar and other medical helicopters are dispatched by REMCS on 155.2950;then switch to the State Police Trunk system [tg 26832] North [tg 26800] south. Upon approaching the landing zone they use either 154.6800 SPEN 1 or 153.7850 SPEN 4 or a frequency designated by the local town.

Also due to the advent of multi-channel programmable radios many agencies have in addition to the NY/NJ URBAN/National Police/Fire Tac channels, will have neighboring towns channels and may use another towns channel for short durations if needed.
